Best-selling author Elmore Leonard dies at 87

DETROIT - He was the master of his genre, the Dickens of Detroit, the Chaucer of Crime.
Every novel Elmore Leonard wrote from the mid-1980s on was a best-seller, and every fan of crime stories knew his name. George Clooney was an admirer. So were Quentin Tarantino, Aerosmith, Saul Bellow and Stephen King . . .
With that bunch, not as complimentary as it sounds. Tarantino likes making movies that celebrate killing white people. King's great opus, 'The Stand,' definitely grisly fun, but let's see: all the evil people gather around a blue-eyed blond satanic white man, while all the saintly people gather around a God-like old black woman. Gosh, how subtle--whatever could that mean? Could provide other King examples but won't bother. In any case, a lot of people loved Leonard. I found his humor, characters and many his novels' events as being way too broad and unlikely, so I had trouble suspending disbelief and gave up trying to read him. Still, no doubt a talented writer. May he rest in peace.
