Charles Krauthammer writes well about many subjects, but when it comes to Israel, the Middle East and anti-Semitism, he is, like most neocons, off his rocker.
This week, he decries the “rise of European anti-Semitism:”
The rise of European anti-Semitism is in reality just a return to the norm. For a millennium, virulent Jew-hatred — persecution, expulsions, massacres — was the norm in Europe until the shame of the Holocaust created a temporary anomaly wherein anti-Semitism became socially unacceptable. The hiatus is over. Jew-hatred is back, recapitulating the past with impressive zeal. Italians protesting Gaza handed out leaflets calling for a boycott of Jewish merchants. As in the 1930s. A widely popular French [sic] comedian has introduced a variant of the Nazi salute. In Berlin, Gaza brought out a mob chanting, “Jew, Jew, cowardly pig, come out and fight alone!” Berlin, mind you.European anti-Semitism is not a Jewish problem, however. It’s a European problem, a stain, a disease of which Europe is congenitally unable to rid itself.
What’s missing here? That the sudden upsurge in “European anti-Semitism” is not recrudescent anti-Semitism of the 1930s. Indeed, it’s only partly European, and to the degree that it is, it comes fromthe radical left. The other part of it is Islam, and it has “risen” because Europe, thanks to its leftist political parties, has imported millions of Jew-hating fanatics from Africa and the Middle East.
From Middle East Monitor, we get this story and photo about the boycott in Rome. That swarthy pair doesn’t look Italians or “European” to me. And from Mr. Krauthammer’s own paper about the chanting mob in Berlin, we get this story and accompanying photo. That crowd is German? “European?”
And as for the “French” comedian Krauthammer refers to, his name is Dieudonné M’bala M’bala, and he’s half Cameroonian. ...
