Reminds me of reading about the explorer Richard Burton when he was in his nation's foreign service, stationed in the Middle East.
Characteristically neglecting his normal diplomatic duties, Burton would trek endlessly back and forth across blazing deserts, exploring and studying just about everything. Various local strongmen became up in arms, convinced that Burton was a dangerous spy, because who in their right mind would willingly undergo such grueling hardships simply to collect, catalog and study plants, animals, rocks, ancient pottery shards, languages, dialects, customs, obscure tribal sexual practices, and the like?
