Sworn On The Fourth Of July—Naturalization Ceremonies Certifying A New People

The idea that Independence Day is turning into “Immigration Day” is deeply weird—the colonists fought against foreign domination, which was maintained by Hessian soldiers. (In the George Bernard Shaw play The Devil’s Disciple, the British General Burgoyne ismade to say that half his “troops are Hessians, Brunswickers, German dragoons, and Indians with scalping knives.”). But we first noted it here on VDARE.com in 2001, with pieces by me, Sam Francis, and Chilton Williamson.
Lately, I’ve noticed that the news keeps featuring these Fourth of July swearing-in ceremonies, where Democrats-in-waiting finally get their voting papers. Obama is attending one of these—not to get sworn in himself (just kidding!) but to swear in a bunch of new citizens. . . .
