AmRen: The Cartoons that Sparked Jihad

The Cartoons that Sparked Jihad

Charlie Hebdo has been infuriating Muslims since 2006, when it published the caricatures of Mohammed that appeared in the Danish newspaper, Jyllands-Posten. In 2012, it caused further outrage when it satirized the 14-minute video Muhammad Movie Trailer, which was uploaded to the Internet in July. According to the New York TimesMuhammadportrays the prophet as “a child of uncertain parentage, a buffoon, a womanizer, a homosexual, a child molester and a greedy, bloodthirsty thug.” The video prompted violent demonstrations in Muslim countries that left 50 dead and hundreds wounded.

Here are some of the Charlie Hebdo cartoons that appeared at that time, with English translations.
