With presidential contenders on all sides struggling to refine their positions on the prickly issue of immigration, nearly three-quarters of Americans say they support a pathway to legal status for undocumented immigrants, according to a poll published Thursday by the Pew Research Center.
In the survey, 72 percent of Americans said immigrants here illegally should be allowed to stay if they meet some requirements, results that have varied little over the last two years.Seventy-two percent of Americans want amnesty for illegal aliens! What an overwhelming percentage! And here I was thinking most Americans were against amnesty, when most everyone is for it! How could I have been so wrong?
The only problem is that we know most Americans are against legalizing illegal aliens. Conservatives are certainly against it, and even many liberals are against it, too. Every time the Times runs an article about some benefit for illegal aliens, like in-state tuition for illegal aliens, the comment section of the Times runs 8 or 9 to 1 against the illegals. And in case there is any doubt, many of the readers write in their comments, "I am a liberal, but I can't stand for this."
So if nearly all conservatives and many liberals are against amnesty, where does this 72% come from? I've always thought that Pew polls had an odd smell to them. ...
