COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – There’s a tangible value in higher education for embracing leftist theory. Just ask high school and university students attending the upcoming national White Privilege Conference.

The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs is offering academic credit for students planning to attend the conference and promises the credit is “widely transferable.”  . . .

Another 30 percent of a student’s grade is comprised of creating an “action plan” to implement what they learn at the White Privilege Conference into their personal and school life. Such suggestions include:

• Starting a student club focused on issues of diversity, privilege and inclusion at school, or a youth group at your church, synagogue, recreation center, etc.
• Developing a specific workshop you would like to present at school or in some other organizational setting once you return home
• A film series you would like to organize and offer for your school or community . . .

Somali immigrants in Malmö are "stuck in a trap" due to a dire local job market, creating overcrowding and low self-confidence, a new report said on Friday. Researchers urged city hall, and pensioners, to address the problem.

The Open Society Foundation published the report as part of a broader look at the Somali diaspora in Europe. It found that 80 percent of Somalis in Sweden's third largest city are out of work.

"Somalis are falling into a black hole in Malmö because they can't get jobs," report author Benny Carlsson of the Lund School of Economics and Management at Lund University told The Local. "(They don't get) opportunities to practice Swedish and meet Swedes, and are forced to live in crowded flats."

The situation fostered, Carlsson said, a "diminished overall sense of self-worth". . . .

Lund researcher Carlsson went a step further, saying that not only city hall but the man on the street could help out. Especially the old man on the street. Getting Sweden's burgeoning population of retired baby boomers to do volunteer work could do just the trick, he argued.

"They've had good careers, are well-connected, know how things work, and have a lot more time on their hands," Carlsson said. "They don't just want to play golf, but are still interested in being engaged. Helping immigrants could be a great win-win volunteer opportunity."

Even a bit of less formal socializing could go a long way, he added.

"It's a common view among Somalis that Swedes are polite and friendly, but they are hard to get to know," he said. "If you have Somali neighbours, invite them to dinner."

Boehner: No immigration reform until Obama rebuilds trust

Washington (AFP) - House Speaker John Boehner threw cold water on the prospects of near-term immigration reform, saying Thursday that Barack Obama must rebuild "trust" in his presidency before there is progress on the issue.

"I have never underestimated the difficulty in moving forward this year," the top Republican in Congress told reporters one week after unveiling a set of immigration reform principles aimed at legalizing the millions of people living in the shadows in the United States.

Boehner said he and many Republicans bristled at Obama's announcement in last month's State of the Union address that he will skirt Congress and wield his executive authority to move on some issues like economic disparity.

Obama's pledge to increase his use of executive powers was only "feeding more distrust" of the administration, and immigration reform will stall until that rift is healed, Boehner said.

"There is widespread doubt about whether this administration can be trusted to enforce our laws, and it's going to be difficult to move any immigration legislation until that changes."

Boehner added that Americans and lawmakers alike "don't trust that the reform we're talking about will be implemented as it was intended to be."

At the height of Seinfeld’s popularity, the NBC comedy was repeatedly accused of presenting an exclusively “white” view of its diverse New York City setting. During Jerry Seinfeld’s BuzzFeed Brews with CBS This Morning interview on Monday, BuzzFeed Business Editor Peter Lauria asked about the enduring criticism, which has carried over to his Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee web series. The Crackle docu-comedy featured white male performers (like Larry David, Ricky Gervais, Alec Baldwin, and Michael Richards) in the first batch of episodes, but later included Sarah Silverman and Tina Fey.

“People think it’s the census or something,” Seinfeld said of the assertion that all pop culture should accurately reflect society. “This has gotta represent the actual pie chart of America? PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Trader Joe's grocery-store chain has dropped a plan to open a new store in the heart of the city's historically African-American neighborhood after activists said the development would price black residents out of the area.

The grocer, whose stores are found in urban neighborhoods across the nation, said Monday it wouldn't press its plan, given community resistance, The Oregonian (http://bit.ly/1n7Jyqb ) reported.

"We open a limited number of stores each year, in communities across the country," it said in a statement. "We run neighborhood stores, and our approach is simple: If a neighborhood does not want a Trader Joe's, we understand, and we won't open the store in question."

The Portland Development Commission had offered a steep discount to the grocer on a parcel of nearly two acres that was appraised at up to $2.9 million: a purchase price of slightly more than $500,000. The lot is at Northeast Alberta Street and Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and has been vacant for years.

Critics said the development would displace residents and perpetuate income inequality in one of the most rapidly gentrifying ZIP codes in the nation.

The Portland African American Leadership Forum said the development commission had in the past made promises about preventing projects from displacing community members but hadn't fulfilled them.

It sent the city a letter saying it would "remain opposed to any development in N/NE Portland that does not primarily benefit the Black community." It said the grocery-store development would "increase the desirability of the neighborhood," for "non-oppressed populations."

The mission of America's 400 national parks is to reflect the country's history — no matter how uncomfortable or unflattering — which is why some contain depictions of slavery, the fight for women's suffrage, Japanese internment and the struggle for civil rights.

Now that archive could include the contributions of Latinos through the telling of the often tempestuous story of Cesar Chavez.

The National Park Service on Thursday announced plans to establish the Cesar Chavez National Historic Park, to recognize the achievements of the activist and the farm labor movement he led. . . .

"We Latinos might stick our heads into Yosemite or Santa Monica Mountains, but there is not much to relate to.… That's why this is so important. . . .
