A 19-year-old charged with murder in connection with last week's fatal assault on a USC graduate student told immigration officials that he entered the country illegally about seven years ago, a federal official said.

The official, who was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter, said Jonathan DelCarmen made the comments during an interview at a Los Angeles County jail where he is being held in connection with the death of Xinran Ji, 24. ...

As a way to honor Eric Cantor’s last day as Majority Leader in the House, Speaker John Boehner did his best to help Barack Obama replace the Republican base with teenagers from Central America.Unfortunately for him, the base has identified mass immigration as the critical issue in American politics and brought enough pressure to prevent the bill being brought to the floor. The danger now: the stupider GOP congresscritters, believing they have to “do something” before recess, will hand Barack Obama a political victory even when he is desperately weak.

A chaotic day on Capitol Hill began with a revolting tribute to Cantor. True to his destructive ideas to the last, Eric Cantor in his last speech talked about being the grandson of immigrants, repeated his call for school choice as a “civil rights” policy, and paid tribute to amnesty stalwarts John Boehner, Kevin McCarthy, and Paul Ryan. Members of both parties stood and applauded a man who, with his last House speech, proved he represented the Beltway Political Class instead of his own constituents. Democrat On U.S. Civil Rights Commission Wants Speech Codes For ‘Adolescent’ 21-Year-Olds

A Democrat on the U.S. Civil Rights Commission has urged campus restrictions on First Amendment-protected speech because, he believes, the still-developing brains of college students cannot properly process certain dangerous ideas.

The civil rights commissioner is Michael Yaki, a former senior adviser to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

The Washington Post’s Eugene Volokh was present at a commission on a briefing on sexual harassment law in education last week when Yaki made his bizarro comments.

The civil rights commissioner said he favors outlawing speech that would be grossly unpopular, such as “a slave auction at a fraternity engagement” or a celebration of Latino culture that involves “making everyone dress as janitors and mop floors.”

Yaki also wants to turn Miss America-type pageants into campus speech crimes. He expressed his belief in the unacceptable dangers of “a situation involving women” in which they “parade around in skimpy clothing and turn in some show or something.”

In embarrassingly vague fashion, Yaki struggled mightily to make some kind of coherent point at the civil rights commission hearing.

    Obviously loony, but is this really new? I had thought Multicultural Marxist PC speech codes had already become the norm on campuses all across the Western world. Ironic, since it was the Left that was protesting not having sufficient 'free speech' at UC Berkeley and elsewhere back in the 60s, and now it is the Left that is gleefully trying to stomp out any free speech with which it disagrees. 

     Still more irony, the Left always seemed to regard the Reagan presidency as the high-water mark of right-wing extremism, or 'fascism,' in the U.S., but I can't recall there being any right-wing speech codes on campuses or elsewhere, nor was it routine for peoples' careers and reputations to be instantly shot down in flames because someone made a slip of the tongue and said something embarrassingly un right-wing.

DENVER — Colorado has started issuing driver’s licenses and identification cards to immigrants regardless of their legal status, marking a dramatic change in a state that less than a decade ago passed strict immigration enforcement laws.

There was a festive mood at one Denver office issuing the documents Friday morning, as state Department of Revenue Director Barbara Brohl congratulated applicants once they had their cards approved.

“I never imagined that I would one day have a driver’s license in my hands,” Mexican immigrant Rosalva Mireles, 37, said in Spanish as she held a paper copy of her new license. The permanent card will be mailed.

She’s one of thousands of immigrants hoping the identification cards will add a degree of legitimacy to their residency in Colorado. About 9,500 people are signed up for appointments through the next 90 days to get the documents, with more getting scheduled every day. Migrant Detention Facility Has Hair Salon, Child Care, Library

Federal immigration officials on Thursday sought to show the softer side of immigrant detention, complete with cartoon wall murals, stuffed animals, playgrounds, snacks and a hair salon at a South Texas facility that will house women and their children who crossed the border illegally.

With a surge in illegal immigration in recent months, especially children traveling alone and parents bringing in children from Central America, authorities moved to convert an all-male detention facility about 50 miles Southeast of San Antonio into one that could temporarily house families.

The Karnes County Residential Center is the third such family center in the nation, with the others in the New Mexico and Pennsylvania, and more could be on the way.

The facility will start receiving immigrants on Friday and can house up to 532 people at a cost of about $140 a day per person.

The Karnes County local government contracts the day-to-day operation with the private prison company The GEO Group.

Border Patrol agents have detained more than 57,000 immigrant children crossing the border alone since October. ...
