It's not just because I have been reading the English translation of Michel Houellebecq's Submission  that I sense we are heading for some sort of apocalypse in 2016.  The novel, ironically published in its original French the day of the Charlie Hebdo massacre (7 January 2015), all too realistically describes an election and near civil war in France in 2022, ending in a Muslim takeover of the state (through an alliance with the left).  Not even a year after its publication, and the more recent events in Paris and San Bernardino, this riveting book seems, if anything, a bit tardy in its time frame.

As the famous supposedly-Chinese curse goes:  "May you live in interesting times." (Yes, I know the curse is apocryphal and about as Chinese as a fortune cookie, but it makes the point.)

In 2016, no matter what happens, it is my suspicion that we will all be cursed as never in our lifetimes -- and I am not young.   We will be yearning for a little boredom or, as the Chinese really do say, "Better to be a dog in a peaceful time, than to be a human in a chaotic (warring) period."

Others have made specific predictions.  That is not my purpose here.  I'm not good at prognostications anyway. (We will be arguing between A and B and it will turn out to be C.) I only want to examine the zeitgeist going into 2016, why it will be, to adopt yet another cliché, a year of living dangerously.

I hope your Christmas and holiday season has been wonderful.  The Christmas holidays are a busy time of year for Judicial Watch because corrupt politicians and bureaucrats often leak embarrassing scandal information during a time when many Americans aren’t focused on the news (and many reporters are on vacation).  Sure enough, we received a Christmas document dump from the Secret Service about Obama’s travel costs.  If the hope was to bury the information, it failed, as our JW team got the word out and gained headlines across the globe.

How would you like to vacation in Hawaii on the taxpayer dime every Christmas?  Would your employer give you a nearly three-week break to do so?  Barack Obama and his family vacation every year in Hawaii – and now we have more of the outrageous costs you incur for his time in Hawaii.

This week we received expense records from the Department of Homeland Security revealing that Secret Service expenses for the Obama family vacation to Honolulu during December 2013-January 2014 cost taxpayers at least $316,698.03.  These new expense records bring the total for the Hawaii Christmas vacation trip to $8,098,060.33.

The Secret Service waited nearly two years to produce the requested numbers to Judicial Watch.  The records were mailed to us on December 22, but it took the U.S. Postal Service six days to deliver them a few miles across town to our offices on December 28.

The heavily redacted records were in response to a January 6, 2014, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.  ...

State Of Jefferson Movement Includes Tuolumne County

The State of Jefferson could become the USA’s fifty-first state and would include Tuolumne, Calaveras, Amador, El Dorado and nearly every county north of Sacramento.

Joe Bick, local resident and advocate for the new State of Jefferson, was Friday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”.

On Wednesday January 6th at 10 AM, those behind the movement will be in Sacramento Declaring the Petitions of Separation to the Secretary of State for recording and then walking them over to the Legislators office for presentation.

According to Bick, Tuolumne and the other counties included in the State of Jefferson has not had adequate representation in the California state legislature for the past several decades. The most expeditious way to restore representation is to create a new state where local issues by local people can be dealt with and representation will be restored. The “Jefferson” state movement is using the legal method of engineering a state split through the formula required by Article IV Section 3 of the US Constitution.i This formula necessitates a greater than 50% majority of both houses of the state legislature and Congress approving the split in order to create a state out of an existing state or states.

In order for “Jefferson” to be successful, three tenets must be completed or verified. First, counties that want to be part of the new state must have their Supervisory Boards Declare and Petition to Separate from California and join the new state (Declarations) which creates standing for each of those counties. Second, financial viability for the new state must be validated. Third, the state and national legislative actions outlined above must achieve a majority result.

As of January 1, 2015, six counties have Declared and Petitioned to Separate from California and join the new state of “Jefferson”. Both the California Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO) and an internally generated financial model have shown that “Jefferson” is a viable entity. By the end of January 2016, six counties will have had their Declarations filed with the Secretary of State of California which could initiate the legislative phase of state separation. The legislative action will be delayed long enough to determine if additional counties would like to join the new state. There are 14 additional counties that have active committees trying to educate the public and reach their supervisors with the message of republican based representation which is guaranteed in Article IV Section 4 of the US Constitution. ...

The new Canadian prime minister, boy Trudeau, had campaigned on the promise to bring in 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada by December 31, 2015.  They fell short by about 19,000!   Here is one important reason why (you won’t see this mentioned by the NO borders agitators in the US resettlement industry!).

Promises, promises! The do-gooder (paternalistic!) Liberals run into a bit of a problem. 70% of Syrian refugees don’t want to go to Canada.

They want to stay in the Middle East!  Can you believe it!  They like their culture and they hope to go home!

The trouble is, Ms. al-Kasem isn’t interested in coming.

The 26-year-old from Daraa, Syria, is one of a sizable number of Syrians turning down the chance to become permanent residents of Canada.According to UN figures, just three out of every 10 households contacted about resettlement in Canada go on to relocate.

“Some families are still hoping to return home, others are concerned about their ability to integrate into another country – including learn the language,” said Aoife McDonnell, an external relations officer at the UNHCR refugee agency in Jordan.
