UK Sky News: 13 Somali refugees convicted in teenage girl sex ring case

Thirteen Somali men were convicted. Some were sentenced from 18 months to 13 years, some have not yet been sentenced. More expense for the British taxpayer who is punished for having “welcomed” the ‘least of these among us.’ And, tragic, of course, for the girls.

While you were having your Thanksgiving dinner yesterday, the Bristol Crown Court was revealing to the British public the extent of the crimes perpetrated by a sex slavery ring run by Somali refugees in Bristol.

By the way, my alerts are filled this morning with stories about how awful it is that the UK has not thrown open its gates to Syrian (mostly Muslim) migrants.  I am not sure weak-kneed politicians are going to be able to hold out against the onslaught of negative publicity being rained on them by the ‘humanitarian industrial complex.’   And, if you want to argue that Somalis and Syrians are two different issues, well, go for it, but I’m sure the general public in the UK doesn’t see much difference.

Thirteen men have been convicted of running a sex ring that saw teenage girls abused, raped and prostituted.

Victims were sexually abused and passed around the men’s friends for money in Bristol.

The court heard several of the girls were groomed to the extent they believed abuse was part of loving relationships they were having with the defendants.

The gang, all of whom are of Somali origin, faced more than 40 charges involving 10 victims aged between 13 and 17, mostly over offences that happened from autumn 2012.

Seven men were convicted at Bristol Crown Court on Wednesday and six following a separate trial in May, but details of the cases can only be revealed now after reporting restrictions were lifted by a judge.

Some of the girls were persuaded to have sex with their ‘boyfriend’s’ friends after being told it was Somali “culture and tradition” and “men always have sex with each other’s girlfriends”.  [Remember that the girls are infidels to these Somali rapists.—ed]

London (AFP) - Prime Minister David Cameron on Friday promised tough curbs on welfare for EU migrants to counter a surge in arrivals and warned European leaders that blocking them could put Britain's EU membership in doubt.

He said the package of reforms would require changes to European Union treaties but said he was "confident" he could deliver a deal.

Immigration to Britain has increased sharply in the past decade and Cameron is under intense pressure to address voters' concerns ahead of the May 2015 general election.

His Conservative party is losing support to the UK Independence Party (UKIP), which advocates leaving the EU altogether as the only way to curb EU migration.

In a long-awaited speech on the issue, Cameron stopped short of calling for a cap on new arrivals or a mooted "emergency brake", which had caused consternation in EU capitals.

But he announced plans to make EU workers wait four years to receive income tax credits and access social housing, and vowed to stop migrants claiming benefits for children living elsewhere in Europe. ...

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Barack Obama last year told a cheering crowd in Cape Town that a $7 billion plan to "Power Africa" would double electricity output on the world's poorest continent and bring "light where currently there is darkness".

A year later, the U.S. president's flagship project for Africa has already achieved 25 percent of its goal to deliver 10,000 megawatts of electricity and bring light to 20 million households and businesses, according to its annual report.

But the five-year plan has not yet delivered the power.

Power Africa has not measured its progress by counting actual megawatts added to the grid but promises of additional power made in deals it says it helped negotiate, according to sources inside the project and documents seen by Reuters.

Some projects facilitated by Power Africa -- a program operated by the U.S. aid agency USAID -- were under way years before the scheme's inception, others are still in the planning stage. ...

High fantasy literature is defined as a subgenre of fantasy literature wherein the stories told include, but are not limited to, alternate worlds with their own consistent sets of physical laws; characters who experience a coming-of-age or other form of inner development; a quest or several quests with the goal of triumphing over an evil force; the existence of magic or other supernatural powers; and, more often than not, the presence of different races or nations within these alternate worlds.

George R. R. Martin’s epic saga A Song of Ice and Fire has all of the above in spades. Ironically, his treatment of the racial aspect differs from that of many other authors. While most fill their worlds with pointy-eared elves, squat and crafty dwarves, hook-nosed goblins, brutish trolls and orcs, tall and noble humans, and all the other cliché fantasy races that get recycled and renamed between writers, Martin populates his world mostly with humans. His fictional humanity, however, is much like our own. A multitude of physical types exist in his invented continents of Westeros, Essos, and Sothoryos, each hailing from their own fatherlands; some races have a great deal in common with each other physically, while others are so unusual that they draw derision at worst and curious glances at best; some individuals and entire races are the product of hybridization; each race has its own unique culture, language, and religious beliefs.

George R. R. Martin is a self-proclaimed liberal, having voiced his support for Obama and the Democratic Party. Despite aligning himself with those who would have us all believe that race is merely a social construct, Martin pays an incredible amount of attention to detail when describing the different human races in his alternate world; certain sections ofA Song of Ice and Fire almost read like passages from The Passing of the Great Race. Moreover, the world he has created is one where many characters are conscious of these racial differences, and where such consciousness is not portrayed as a bad thing. ...

“When you’ve got your health, you’ve got just about everything” ran the tag-line in a famous Geritol commercial from the 1970s, and the guys we most have reason to be grateful for are undoubtedly those who’ve developed the medical practices and the drugs and devices that have transformed our lives over the past hundred fifty years. 

Before the turkey gets carved, it’s worth taking a moment to remember a few of these brilliant, persistent, and lucky men, and recall their accomplishments.  Even when they’ve won Nobel Prizes in Medicine, their names are virtually unknown.  They’re not mentioned in the Core Curriculum or celebrated by Google on their birthdays.

Next time you pop an aspirin, remember Felix Hoffmann of Bayer.  In 1897, he converted salicylic acid to acetylsalicylic acid, much easier on the stomach.  Aspirin remains the most popular and arguably the most effective drug on the market.  In 1948 two New York biochemists, Bernard Brodie and Julius Axelrod, documented the effect that acetaminophen (Tylenol), synthesized by Harmon Morse in 1878, had on pain and fever.  Gastroenterologist James Roth persuaded McNeil Labs to market the analgesic in 1953.
