Mariah Parker, a 26-year-old University of Georgia doctoral student, beat Taylor Pass by 13 votes to secure victory as Athens-Clarke County Commissioner 

She took her oath of office using the book of Malcolm X's life as opposed to the Bible 
'They asked if they would like the Bible and I said no,' Parker said

Viral photos have since circulated of Parker holding up her fist while her mother - Mattie Parker - holds the book for her daughter

'Malcolm's willingness to uneditedly speak about black people at large, are qualities that I want to embody,' Parker added 

Alex Haley - the author of Roots wrote 'The Autobiography of Malcolm X' which was published in 1967 ...
