4 obstacles for the Gang of Eight's immigration bill

The long legislative battle over immigration reform begins this week in the Senate Judiciary Committee

The Gang of Eight's immigration bill has been introduced to the public, so it's time for Sen. Marco Rubio and company to roll up their sleeves and try to get it passed in Congress. The senators certainly sound confident: Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) have said that their goal is to get 70 or more votesin the Senate.

But is it really going to be that easy? This is, after all, one of the most ambitious pieces of immigration legislation in decades. (Get the details on the bill here.) This week, the bill faces its first hurdle when it goes to the Senate Judiciary Committee for a mark-up. A look at what else the bill is up against:

Muslim development plans meet resistance in rural Maryland

A Muslim group’s effort to move its campus from College Park to Maryland’s rural Howard County is being met with opposition from local residents, who say dense construction plans for the site would spoil the quiet character of the area.

Although both sides insist that the debate turns solely on setting zoning precedent, it marks the latest in a series of disputes across the country in which locals have resisted the introduction of Islamic centers to their communities.

The Maryland debate began last summer, when the Dar-us-Salaam community proposed replacing its overcrowded facility. The center would be built on about 66 acres of land once home to a Catholic school 45 miles north of the District. Bordered by thoroughbred horse farms, the property is about a 15-minute drive to the nearest Starbucks, Wal-Mart or McDonald's.

Islamic center planners initially talked about sweeping renovations to the former Catholic school, with a massive five-sided mosque and cultural center. Early reports indicated plans to construct underground parking and build dormitories to accommodate 5,000 worshippers, though the community’s representatives have dismissed those suggestions. ...

     American localities are probably becoming aware of what Western Europe has been waking up to, which is that between the large area of surrounding parking taken over by tens of thousands of worshipers and the continual outdoor prayer-rug religious observances, a big chunk of land around these structures is essentially claimed for Islam. 

     Our free institutions and our deep traditional respect for the protections of various individual rights is really not set up for this. It is somewhat similar to when cowbirds, using an adaptation that allowed them to follow buffalo herds, swoop down and deposits their eggs in songbird nests, after which the hapless pairs of mom and dad songbirds dutifully feed the larger, more hungry and aggressive cowbirds, whereupon the smaller weaker songbird chicks are pushed aside and slowly starve to death.

This book is so politically incorrect that I admire Amazon.com for actually carrying it. Written in the early 1970s, this book looks beyond the cold war to a North-South confrontation in which European civilization is unilaterally morally disarmed. The thesis is simple: suppose a million starving people from the Ganges actually took Western rhetoric of compassion, exploitation  etc., to heart, and commandeered  en masse, shipping, with the intention of moving to the shores of France? (Raspail, of course, is French.) Would anyone stop them? 

The imagery employed is interesting. The title comes from Revelation, Chapter 20, and refers to the forces of evil laying seige to the camp of the saints, here meant to be the nations of the West. "The thousand years are over..." is chanted from Third World lips, harking to the millennial reign of Christ, as well as to the millennial domination of Europe over the globe. Raspail has the Vatican, World Council of Churches, and other organs of what he saw as Western liberal compassion try to feed the Armada, as it sails around the Cape. The bodies of their would-be benefactors are cast into the sea. 

The characters who oppose, with violence, the Armada are named with names like Constantine Drasages and Luke Notaras, namesakes of the last Byzantine Emperor and Admiral. They are portrayed as villains in the media; one of the more thoughtful leftists, fashionably in support of opening up France's shores, but cynical enough to see the potential results, reflects on the parallels between Byzantium's fate and that of the West. 

The author's point is that any who dare to say that 'white' civilization has a right to exist are branded racists and cast out of the pale of polite society. The narrative is set up as a flashback. The Armada is about to disgorge its human cargo in Provence as we begin. An old man, M. Calgues, awaits them, Mozart playing in the background, after setting what he expects to be his last supper among the living. From there, we go back to the beginning, in India, as a Western cleric preaches quasi-liberation theology to the masses. Along the way, as the news spreads over the world, we digress, looking at Manhattanites holing up in skyscrapers as the spectre of race riots beckon, and at Russian troops on the Manchurian border contemplating the human waves gathering to wash over them. 

The central question of the book is this: will the West (including Russia - more properly, the North), when (not if) confronted with de facto occupation of national territories by Third World people, coming to live, but not to assimilate, use violence to save itself? Is there left in Euro-American civilization a will to live that is strong enough to pull a trigger? The stark question is answered in one of two possible ways by the concluding chapter. This astringent book, whether you agree with Raspail's views or not, demands thoughtful attention to the questions posed. How will we deal with population/immigration issues?      'The Camp of the Saints' was written so long ago that I was a Kennedy-McGovern liberal Democrat. Such a prophetic work. It is happening differently than it did in the book, as Raspail said at the time that it would happen differently. But if you look at today's rapid demographic changes: the United States heading toward becoming majority Latino, the amazingly fast morphing of London into 'Londonistan', Muslims burning parts of Paris, even Sweden now having black 'no-go' areas, where, for example, ambulances need armed protection, and, maybe above all, the 'soft-totalitarianism' of Political Correctness locking this whole ever worsening nightmare into place, above criticism in polite society. So that today we find ourselves to be seemingly hapless real-life characters playing various roles in 'The Camp of the Saints,' revised updated edition.

Jewish ethnic networking has been a theme at TOO, ranging from appointments to the Supreme Court (notoriously, Elena Kagan), admissions to elite universities, the world of art (e.g., Mark Rothko), literature (e.g., pro-Israel writers Shani Boianjiu and Risa Miller), and philosophy (e.g., Spinoza). Not to mention the intellectuals discussed in The  Culture o f  Critique.

Now comes an article by Samuel Goldman in The American Conservative “Mild Nepotism and the Illusion of Meritocracy,” the point of which is that the path of Nathaniel Rich to fame and fortune in the literary world has been greatly aided by having a “famous name and the connections that often go along with it.” Rich is the son of former New York Times columnist Frank Rich who has come to the attention of TOO several times, including for a piece of Jewish triumphalism in which, like the New York Times editorial page, he eagerly looks forward to an America with a White minority.

Goldman cites Margaret Sullivan’s comment in the Times:

It’s beginning to feel like Nathaniel Rich Month at The Times. The author’s new novel was reviewed in the Arts section on April 10, then again in the Sunday Book Review on April 14. Mr. Rich also wrote an essay for the Sunday Book Review, with many references to that novel, “Odds Against Tomorrow.” In addition, the Editors’ Choice section of the Sunday Book Review listed Mr. Rich’s novel second on its list.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Avery and Susan Burns don’t like the immigration-reform bill in the U.S. Senate one bit. “People come here illegally, and now we’re giving them the red carpet,” grumbled Avery, a 71-year-old doctor, climbing the steps of the public library on a recent morning.

His disgust is making him reconsider his support for home-state Sen. Lindsey Graham, the only Republican sponsor of the bill who is up for reelection in 2014. Yet Susan said she’d still vote for Graham because he’s a “strong Republican,” recalling his leadership during former President Clinton’s impeachment.

The retired couple’s reaction shows why Graham has reason to be on his toes, but not to panic.

Immigration reform is not popular in this heavily conservative state, which followed Arizona’s lead and passed a tough crackdown on illegal immigrants two years ago. ...

Graham has spent the past decade building a reputation as one of the biggest military hawks in the Senate, an image that serves as a conservative counterweight to his role in immigration reform. ...

     Apparently "one of biggest military hawks" does not include defending U.S. borders.

“He doesn't have to win on immigration. His larger profile is on national security, and that’s not going to change,” said Charleston-based Republican strategist Jim Dyke. ...

Mega-donor Sheldon Adelson hosted a fundraiser for Graham on Tuesday in Las Vegas. ...

     The usual suspects. 

Graham has weathered blowback from anti-immigrant and other conservative groups before. When he championed a similar proposal during President Bush’s second term ...

     Of course the National Journal reports that you are "anti-immigrant" if you simply don't want illegal aliens amnestied. In 2013 this is considered unbiased professional journalism. 

     As for also championing the Bush II amnesty attempts, it is obvious that Graham, like his fellow enabler John McCain, is like a slobbery amnesty-intoxicated drunk, beyond any known cure--except defeat at the polls.

 Graham is also receiving some political cover from Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, one of the most popular Republicans in the country, who is leading the reform campaign in the media. ...

     More recent polls show media and neocon darling, and GOP Wonderboy--We got us a real live Republican Cuban!--Marco Rubio is becoming less popular each day as he champions rewarding the invaders of America.

The New Canadian Ideal? 

Yet if we went to each of these kid's home nations, none would be importing vast numbers of other races and cultures and demographically phasing out their own majority ethnic group. Apparently the raging popularity among ruling elites in all Western nations for multiculturalism and diversity-is-God has yet to catch on among non-white elites around the rest of the globe. How odd.
