WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama will focus his State of the Union address on boosting job creation and economic growth at a time of high unemployment, underscoring the degree to which the economy could threaten his ability to pursue second-term priorities such as gun control, immigration policy and climate change.
Obama also may use Tuesday's prime-time address before a joint session of Congress to announce the next steps for concluding the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan by the end of 2014. ...
In perhaps the most ominous omen as to the State of the Union's gloomy economic forecast, President Obama is having to layoff 5 of the 25 employees who make up his Teleprompter staff, which means his speeches from now on will have to eliminate all dangling participles, diphthongs and the letter 'q', and the president will no longer be able to point commandingly with his right forefinger. One sentence of an advance copy of the address reads, "When it comes to balancing the budget, we will all have to mind our p's and r's."
