The White House on Tuesday threatened to veto a Republican bill that cuts off federal funding for so-called sanctuary cities that refuse to help the government crack down on illegal immigration.
“The administration believes that these provisions would lead to mistrust between communities and State and local law enforcement,” the Office of Management and Budget said in a statement.
The White House argues the measure would harm “the ability of law enforcement to keep communities safe across the country and impede our efforts to safely, fairly, and effectively enforce the nation's immigration laws.”
The veto threat was expected given the longstanding disagreements between President Obama and Republican lawmakers about how best to reform the nation’s immigration laws. ...
