Experts: Markey proposal may threaten free speech
U.S. Sen. Edward J. Markey wants the government to study and recommend ways to stop the Internet, TV and radio from “encouraging hate crimes,” but First Amendment advocates say the bill is a menace to free speech.
“This proposed legislation is worse than merely silly. It is dangerous,” said civil liberties lawyer Harvey A. Silverglate, arguing even hate speech is protected absent a crime. “It is not up to Sen. Markey, nor to the federal government, to define for a free people what speech is, and is not, acceptable.”
Markey’s bill would direct a government agency to identify hate speech and create recommendations. Markey in a statement yesterday said the bill makes “crystal clear that any recommendations must be consistent with the First Amendment’s free speech protections.” . . .
I think the key thing to watch out for in the future is the charge of 'incitement.' The Tolerance Police know it is very difficult and could easily backfire to ban certain words outright. But, as in the case of Paul Weston in the UK, our 'soft totalitarian' overlords will continue to pass legislation and make rules saying that if you publicly state, such as on the Internet, something that is 'hateful' / un-PC, you can be charged with either inciting your fellow 'haters' to take criminal actions or intentionally inciting innocent downtrodden groups to demonstrate in the streets so that your fellow haters can gleefully attack them.
In this way the Multicultural Marxists have simply redefined un-PC speech as being outside the purview of free speech. I recall a news video awhile back showing some protesters along a road holding up signs, “Diversity Is A Code Word For White Genocide!" After the clip was shown, the news anchor quickly decided that this was definitely not a matter of "legitimate free speech," but of "hate speech." So a lot of this is already in place. I guess open-borders-birthrate demographic genocide is merely, what, lovingly blotting out the stain of White people from this Earth?
